SWIMMING DEBACLE
One more exciting memory comes to my mind:
Xerxes Dastoor—our dearly departed brother, whom we all knew as "Bhim"—and I went to the CCI to earn our Swimmer's Badge. Our examiner was a District Scoutmaster whose real name has long since slipped my memory. To all of us, however, he was simply Scouter "Fu Man Chu," thanks to his magnificent long moustache that gave him a distinctly Chinese appearance.
Another Scout joined us on this expedition. To spare his blushes I shall refer to him simply as "A."
The swimming test began. Bhim and I successfully completed all the required drills and proudly earned our badges.
Then came A's turn. What none of us knew at the time was that he couldn't swim!
Undeterred by this rather significant handicap, “A” marched confidently to the edge of the pool, summoned every ounce of courage, and launched himself into the water with a spectacular leap.
The moment he hit the water, however, instinct for self-preservation took over. In a flash, he latched onto Scouter Fu Man Chu with the grip of a drowning man clutching his last lifeline, holding on with absolute determination and refusing to let go.
Poor Scouter Fu Man Chu suddenly found himself conducting a rescue operation instead of a swimming test!
Needless to say, "A" did not earn his Swimmer's Badge that day. Even so, one cannot help but admire either his extraordinary courage—or his absolute faith that Fu Man Chu would save him if things went wrong. Perhaps it was a generous measure of both??
