How I Almost Got Thrown Out of Talatis!

It was my second-last year as a Scout, and I was serving as a Patrol Leader of the Tiger Patrol. We had just returned from a camp at Uran, where we had been subjected to what I can only describe as a gruelling hike from Uran to Panvel in temperatures exceeding 50°C! Some of you may still remember that infamous hike.

I was immensely proud of my Tiger Patrol, which was the only patrol to complete the entire hike on foot. The other patrols managed to hitch rides on passing lorries, and frankly, I don't blame them one bit!

But I was furious. I felt it was completely unreasonable to expect young boys to undertake such an exhausting hike in such scorching heat. I made my feelings quite clear to one of the Scouters, Mr. X, telling him that it was wrong to put children through such an ordeal.

Little did I know that my outburst would soon land me in serious trouble!

We returned from camp, and the following Sunday, a treasure hunt had been organised. Still smarting from the Uran hike and thoroughly annoyed with the way it had been conducted, I decided to boycott the event and stayed home.

A few days later, I received a postcard in the mail from Mr. X, informing me that I had been "summarily rusticated"!

I was stunned. Rusticated? From Talatis? For refusing to participate in a treasure hunt?

The following Sunday, I turned up at the Scout Hut, only to be confronted by Mr. X, who informed me that I had been expelled from Talatis and was no longer welcome to attend.

I distinctly remember my response: "Don't talk nonsense!"

As far as I was concerned, this was outrageous. I had expressed my honest opinion about what I believed was an unfair and potentially dangerous hike. Surely, that could not be grounds for throwing me out of the Scout Group!

The matter was subsequently taken up at a meeting of the Scouters. Fortunately, there were people who believed in fairness and were willing to stand up for me. Rohinton Patel and Mickey Maka spoke in my defence, and their intervention proved crucial. Thanks to them, I was not thrown out of the very Scout Group that meant so much to me.

Looking back, it is remarkable how a disagreement over a hike and a missed treasure hunt nearly brought my Scouting days to an abrupt end. As a young Scout, I had simply spoken my mind, perhaps a little too bluntly, and refused to back down. But what I remember most fondly is not the threat of expulsion, but the two Scouters who stood by me when I needed them most.

Rohinton Patel and Mickey Maka, I shall always remain grateful to you both. Your support ensured that my journey with Talatis continued, and this incident remains one of the most unforgettable episodes of my Scouting years.

Sometimes, the greatest lessons in Scouting are not learnt on hikes or around campfires, but from the people who stand up for you when the chips are down!
